Car porn, pinnacle-of-motorsport-engineering edition

If you follow F1, you’ve probably heard Michael Schumacher’s complaints about having to manage the tires rather than push all-out on every lap.  It will not surprise you to learn that the teams really wish their drivers could push all-out on every lap, and have correspondingly been developing ways to make the car easier on the tires without compromising pace.  Craig Scarborough has a couple of neat articles up on the subject, one of which is essentially a press release from Renault:

The other is a technical summary of McLaren’s nifty mechanic-adjustable brake ducting:

McLaren have been doing something like this for years now at cold circuits, running more open brake ducting (exposing the disc) in colder weather to bring the tires up to temperature faster, but this gives the team tighter control over the effect.  I could swear that Renault tried something vaguely similar in 2008, ducting part of the engine’s exhaust onto the rear tires to bring them up to temperature, but I can’t find a reference to it.

And if you’re looking for pure car porn, or maybe a new wallpaper, F1-Fanatic have revamped their gallery of F1 cars.  Lots of good stuff to be found there.
