Aretae wins the internet today:

Need is the big wrong think.  Anybody using “need” in their thinking is likely to be 100% confused.  It’s all tradeoffs, all the way down.
Take 3 factors:

  1. Cost
  2. Benefit
  3. Other things you could do with the $ or time

After you’ve hit all 3 factors…you can talk about which things you would prefer to do.  If you talk need…you’re just nuts.  Need talk is an attempt to short-circuit rational behavior, and focus entirely on benefit, and ignore both cost, and opportunity cost.

Need is just another word for want, or lack. Need implies necessary, but in most cases, simply side-steps the question of how it becomes necessary. I wish to behave in a certain fashion, but to do so means that too many of my personal resources are diverted from other behaviours I wish to exhibit. Now we can introduce unfairness, since some people seem to be able to behave in certain ways that I find myself unable to perform. It is this unfairness that must be regulated. Either positively, by providing me the means to afford my chosen behaviours, or negatively, by regulating or taxing others, so that they may not behave in ways I find myself unable to perform.

Of course, the best solution is both.
